Skip the Embassy, Fly to Spain: This Visa Trick Saves You Thousands
Use this clever location strategy to cut costs and live 3x longer (abroad).
Hey Champions!
I came across this post in a Spanish Digital Nomad group and nearly died when I read the numbers involved. A bloke in Australia reached out to the Spanish embassy in Canberra about applying for the Digital Nomad Visa (DNV). The cost?
Over 4,500 dollarydoos—or around €2,500 per person! Check out the thread below.
Yuck! But also an opportunity for geo-arbitrage (again)!
When we talk about geo-arbitrage, we usually focus on the big-ticket wins like cutting your living expenses in half, upgrading your lifestyle, or fast-tracking early retirement. But here’s a lesser-known perk: you can sometimes use geo-arbitrage to dramatically reduce visa application costs.
Yes, it’s niche. But us travellers need visas—and paying more than necessary? That’s a hard pass from me.
Visa Fees Are Often Based on Reciprocity
A group expert chimed in and explained that visa fees often depend on your nationality and where you're applying from. Many countries apply reciprocity pricing—essentially charging foreign applicants the same as what their own citizens are charged when applying for visas abroad.
So if Aussies charge Spaniards thousands for long-term visas, Spain returns the favour at its embassies in Australia.
Why can’t we all just get along?
Case Study: The $4,540 Visa Shock
So, our mate Lionel shares that the Spanish consulate in Canberra quoted him AU$4,540 per person to apply for the Spain DNV. That’s over €2,500 each—and worst of all, it’s non-refundable.
If you’re applying as a couple or family, that’s a monster of a sunk cost before you even pack your bags.
The Geo-Arbitrage Workaround
Now here’s where it gets spicy: if you fly to Spain and apply from within the country, the fee is just €73.26 per person. I know right!
Even if you pay someone locally to help with the paperwork, your total cost is likely under €400 per person, not €2,500+. That’s a saving of over 90%—just by changing where you submit your application.
And because I’m a generous legend, I’ve done the heavy lifting for you. Here’s 6 seconds looking on google flights.
And a further 13 seconds on Airbnb.
Number Crunching Time
Compare that to paying €2,500+ per person in Australia. For just €548.97 more, or about AU$1074, you’ve:
Flown to Spain,
Paid for a whole month of quality accommodation,
And applied for your visa—while sipping sangria, not waiting at the embassy in Canberra.
Massive win. But like a bad infomercial—just wait, because there’s more…
Bonus: Longer Visa if You Apply Inside Spain!
Here’s the kicker most people don’t realise:
If you apply from within Spain, and get approved, the Digital Nomad Visa is valid for three years.
But if you apply from outside Spain (like from Australia), you’ll only be granted a one-year visa.
So not only do you save thousands—you get three times the length on your visa. Lets goooo!
Geo-Arbitrage in Action
This is a textbook example of using location to your advantage—the heart of geo-arbitrage. Whether it’s rent, dental work, or now even visa fees, don’t assume your home country is the best place to handle admin.
Explore whether you can apply in-country at your destination and score a better deal. It’s the same logic people use for medical tourism—only now it applies to bureaucracy.
Save Big, Stay Longer, Start Sooner
If you're chasing early retirement, the digital nomad lifestyle, or just looking to stretch your budget further abroad, remember that geo-arbitrage goes beyond cheap rent and tasty street food.
It can save you thousands in paperwork fees, grant you longer visa stays, and fast-track your transition to a freer, cheaper, and more exciting life.
Cheers
